Circumcision Party
Some within the early Christian community, known as the circumcision party, believed that Gentiles needed to adopt Jewish customs, including circumcision, to be saved. This was a point of significant tension, as it contradicted Paul’s gospel of salvation through faith alone.
Galatians 2:3 Paul points out they are “false brothers”. As he speaks about circumcision and freedom through Christ Jesus - because Jesus is salvation not circumcision. v 7 He calls it the “good news of the uncircumcision.” Galatians 2:16 He then goes on to expound on the works of the law vs the works of Jesus Christ in relation to salvation.
Galatians 2:8-12 8 (For the same God who was at work in Peter as an emissary to the Jews (those with the bris milah/circumcision), also was at work in me as a emissary to the Gentiles.) 9 Realizing the favor that had been given to me, Jacob and Peter[a] and John—who are the recognized pillars—shook hands in partnership with Barnabas and me,[b] so that we would go to the Gentiles and they to the Jews (those with the bris milah/circumcision). 10 They asked only that we remember the poor—something I also was eager to do.
Titus 1:10 Paul calls them insubordinate, vain-talkers, and mind-deceivers; “Cretans! Always liars, evil beasts, lazy bellies!” Giving way to Jewish fables and commands of men - turning away from the truth. They profess to know God, but they deny [Him] by their works, being abominable, and disobedient, and disapproved to every good work.
Acts 11: those of the faction of the Bris Milah were taking issue with him, 3 Saying, "You entered into a bais of anashim arelim (uncircumcised men) and you sat at tish with them."
Galatians 6:12-14 Paul says they do not keep the law themselves.
As many as crave to be good preeners in the basar (Ro 2:29), these compel you (Goyim) to undergo bris milah; they (the mohalim of Goyim) do so only to avoid suffering redifah (persecution) for the Etz of Moshiach (DEVARIM 21:23).
13 For not even those of the party of the bris milah are shomer mitzvot themselves; they (the mohalim of Goyim) want you (Goyim) to undergo bris milah for the purpose of boasting in your basar!
2 Corinthians 11:3-15 - many see these text as applying to them as well. Paul says they preach a different Jesus, a different gospel, are false apostles, siguising themselves as apostles of Christ, disguising themselves as servants of righteousness.

The Circumcision Party * 2. The Battle Over Salvation and the Law
- : Some within the early Christian community, known as the circumcision party, believed that Gentiles needed to adopt Jewish customs, including circumcision, to be saved. This was a point of significant tension, as it contradicted Paul’s gospel of salvation through faith alone.
- 5. Paul Confronts Peter in Antioch (Galatians 2:11-14)
- Peter’s Hypocrisy: Paul narrates an incident where Peter came to Antioch, and Paul confronted him publicly. Peter had been eating with Gentiles, living in the freedom of the gospel, until certain men from the circumcision party arrived. Fearing their judgment, Peter withdrew and separated himself from the Gentiles, signaling that the Gentiles were not fully accepted unless they adhered to Jewish customs.
- 5. Paul Confronts Peter in Antioch (Galatians 2:11-14)
- The Issue at Hand: Paul’s confrontation centers around Peter’s actions. While Peter had previously acknowledged that salvation was by faith in Yeshua, his actions (withdrawing from the Gentiles in fear of the circumcision party) undermined that message. Paul accuses Peter of hypocrisy because he was living in the freedom of the gospel with the Gentiles but then acted as if Gentiles were not fully accepted unless they conformed to Jewish customs.
