Lawlessness
Define
- Hebrew: פַּשְׁעָה (pashʿāh) or עֲוֹן (ʿāwōn) – the closest Old Testament equivalents
- pashʿāh (פַּשְׁעָה): rebellion, transgression, breaking away from just authority
- ʿāwōn (עֲוֹן): iniquity, guilt, perversion of God’s order (often linked to willful violation of divine law)
- Greek: anomia (ἀνομία) – lawlessness, contempt and violation of law, wickedness (1 John 3:4)
- Directly equated with sin: "sin is lawlessness"
- Contrasted with doing what is right (1 John 3:7) and loving one another (1 John 3:11).
